| | | | | Extra info | The history of Palm begins in 1597 with the deed of sale of a homestead . The archives of the municipality Steenhuffel mention: one homestead, situated opposite the Kercke which was called Den Hoorn, along Baene van Aelst to Mechelen.
In 1747, the first "official" signs of brewing activity began at Steenhuffel. A deed of census under the Ancien Regime lists traders and shopkeepers, including the Associations Bedding 'De Oude Croon', 'Het Hoefijzer' and 'De Drij Coninghen''. Two breweries, 'De Hoorn' and 'De Valck' also appear. The Brouwerij De Hoorn, owned by Jean-Baptiste Mesmaecker , will finally become the special Palm brewery in 1929.
In 1908 Henriette Mesmaecker, the granddaughter of Jean-Baptiste Mesmaecker married Arthur Van Roy who was from Rhode. Arthur Van Roy gave new impetus to the production of beer. During the rise of lagers, he continued to stick to traditional beer of high fermentation and he gave priority to the peculiarities of local beer, over the possible growth opportunities of lager.
In the First World War , the brewery completely destroyed. Arthur Van Roy built them up again and made them bigger. In 1929 he gave the 'beer Steenhuffel' the brand name 'Palm Special " referring to the beer style' Special Belge and Palm as a sign of the victory of high fermentation beer on the increasingly popular lager.
The brewery is now a modern plant catering to the growing market for specialty beers. Since 1998, Brouwerij Palm also owns Brouwerij Rodenbach. |
