Brewer/bottler #15167 | | Name | Société Laitière Moderne (SLM) |
| | | State/Province | Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes |
| | | | | Extra info | The Société Laitière Moderne (SLM), stablished in 1907,, located in Cours Albert Thomas, near rue Villon, had created small "Le Bon Lait" stores located throughout the city and in Monplaisir at 31, 110 and 127 Grande Rue. These shops, tiled in white and blue earthenware, sparkling clean, were run by a welcoming milkmaid. Delivered at dawn, in large galvanized cans, the milk was sold at retail. We came to stock up with our "berte"*, our jar or even a liter of well-rinsed glass did the trick. The milkmaid, still in a white coat, served the desired quantity which she drew from the cans by means of a long-handled measure. She knew her clientele perfectly and was always smiling, had a kind word for everyone, worrying about the health of some or worrying about the absence of others. The daily stop at "Bon Lait" was a shared pleasure: nothing could alter this moment of conviviality.
You have all understood it, the Grande Rue: it was the Avenue des Frères Lumière when I was a child.
* berte or berthe is a Lyonnais word designating a metal container, where dairymen and housewives store their milk |
