| | | | | | | | | Extra info | The Tobacco By-Products & Chemical Corporation was founded in July 1886 by Goldsborough Robinson in Louisville, Kentucky. Its industry was chemicals and its headquarters were in Louisville, Kentucky (1886-1948), Richmond, Virginia (1948-1955), Cleveland, Ohio (1955-1958), Chicago, Illinois (1958-1971) and Elgin, Illinois (1971-?).
The company was acquired by the Continental Tobacco Company in 1899 and reorganized as the Kentucky Tobacco Products Company. In 1919, the company went into liquidation and was reorganized again as Tobacco By-Products. It was acquired by the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corporation in 1936. In 1955, Virginia-Carolina, along with the Diamond Alkali Company, spun off the Black Leaf Products Division and formed the Diamond Black Leaf Company. Under agreement, the Diamond Alkali Company gradually acquired interest into Diamond Black Leaf over the following five years. In 1958, Diamond Black Leaf was sold into a newly-formed entity called Black Leaf Products Company. From the 1970s until the 1990s, the Black Leaf company was under pressure by the U.S. Government for using DDT in its products. A source from 1993 shows that the company was a division of the Wilbur-Ellis Company, and later became a division of SureCo, Inc. in 1996. The company dissolved sometime in the 2000s.
