Extra info Brief history of Bakery Simonis-Poppelier

Jan Simonis lived at Keizersdijk 3 in Raamsdonksveer, his profession being: pastry specialist. He was married to Pitje Poppelier. They had 7 children: Willy, Jo, Nelly, Nico, Dyna, Nellie and Mini.

The Simonis-Poppelier store was first located at Hoofdstraat 29 . Anton Bouwens was a baker's assistant (later started his own bakery at Keizersdijk 19 ). Simonis-Poppelier later moved to Keizersdijk 3 and 5. Read an additional story here .
In 1917, Jan Simonis started a bakery in the building Hoofdstraat G.41. The building was later replaced by a new building that now houses BRUNA. The bakery became too small and in 1926 Jan Simonis built a house and bakery with a luxury shop (including a lunchroom) at the address Keizersdijk 5 - 7 . Baker Anton Bouwens was employed by Jan Simonis as a servant from an early age and learned the baker's trade from Jan. Later, Anton Bouwens started his own business and had a bakery and bakery shop a few buildings further from Jan Simonis on Keizersdijk.

Jan Simonis had two sons and four daughters: Willy, Nico, Jo, Nelly, Dina and Mini. Son Willy, married to Jo Pols, took over the bakery in 1942. Son Nico started a plumbing company, first from the building on Hoofdstraat, later on Keizersdijk.

Willy was the baker who had the first mobile shop in Raamsdonkveer. A caravan converted into a shop in a burgundy color (just like the tow car). Willy painted a large photo of his daughter Henny on the back door of the mobile shop. In 1955 Willy sold the bakery to baker De Man. De Man renovated the beautiful storefront and started a small supermarket in it. After a few years, De Man left the building and Timmermans took over the building. In the former bakery, he started a snack factory with the production of nasi balls, bami slices, etc.

Jan Simonis' second daughter, Nelly, married Bram Lambregts from Princenhage (former independent municipality (until 1942) and nowadays a neighborhood of Breda). Nelly met Bram when he came to work as a baker in father Jan's business. After the marriage, Bram and Nelly took over Bram's father's butcher's shop in Princenhage. Because Bram suffered from 'window legs', he could not stand in the butcher's shop and shop for long. Just after the war, 'De Witte Leeuw' came up for sale. Bram and Nelly sold the butcher's shop and took over 'De Witte Leeuw' . Nelly and Bram were back in Raamsdonksveer. In 1964, Bram's eldest son, Harrie, took over the business from his parents.
