E.& J. Burke had the rights to import Guinness going back to 1864, and the “Cat” trademark is almost as old. Edward and John Burke were Arthur Guinness's nephews, they did all the early export of Guinness and had premises at Bachelors Walk, North Lotts , Liverpool, Australia and very large business in New York. Their own name took primacy over the Guinness name on the stout they sold .The Burke family was one of the biggest bottlers of Guinness for export and in the 1930s opened a brewery on Long Island, which they later sold to Guinness. |
