| | | | | Extra info | Gaden's was formed in 1871 by George H. Gaden, a former messenger and letter carrier, who set up an aerated water plant on Prescott Street. Shortly after 1871, Gaden's moved to 150 Duckworth Street and began to manufacture and bottle lemonade, ginger ale, ginger beer and numerous other aerated waters.An advertisement from 1882 states that Gaden's products could be purchased for 5 shillings per dozen with a bottle return.
By 1890, Gaden's moved their company to a much larger plant at 198-202 Duckworth Street. By 189. George Gaden died in October, 1893 leaving control of the business to his sister, Triphena. Triphena sold the business to John R. Bennett. Bennett reorganized the company under the name of Gaden's Aerated Waters Company, Limited. During the 1900s, Gaden's continued successfully under the control of the Bennett family, who later became bottlers of Coca-Cola in 1938.
In 1941, John R. Bennett died and in 1942, Gaden's was sold to a number of St. John's businessmen including Chesley A. Crosbie, Charles R. Bell, Arthur Johnson and later, Edgar L. Hickman. Shortly after the change in ownership, the company became known as Gaden's, Limited and a new plant was built at 665-683 Water Street. Gaden's continued to operate until 1977 when it was purchased by Wometco Enterprises, Inc. of Miami, Florida. |
