Extra info The Sociedad de Beneficencia de Arequipa was created on October 28, 1848 and installed on December 1 of the same year under the name of Junta de Beneficencia Departamental de Arequipa during the republican period of the first government of Don Ramón Castilla (1845 – 1851). . In its beginnings, the Junta de Beneficencia Departamental de Arequipa was conceived to serve, in general, the most needy people in the region, for whose mission it was given the administration of Institutions that already carried out social and charitable work in isolation, such as the Hospital San Juan de Dios, the Chaves de la Rosa Orphanage (dates from 1794). School of First Letters, the General Cemetery of the Apacheta (dates from 1833), the Balneario de Jesús (dates from 1802).
The purpose of its creation was to centralize all government actions aimed at meeting the needs of the population lacking resources and in abandonment in a solid Institution, that is how the today called Sociedad de Beneficencia de Arequipa was born, which was consolidated thanks to the second impulse received in the second government of Don Ramón Castilla (1858-1862).
The process of consolidation of the Sociedad de Beneficencia de Arequipa was developed over a long period of time from 1900 to 1985. Throughout this period, this charity was able to add to its role of social assistance, the active role of generator of resources, in that direction productive programs were implemented such as the Planta Embotelladora del Agua de Jesús (Agua de Jesús Bottling Plant), the Arequipa Lottery, the Hotel Presidente (today Hotel Arequipa), a Printing Press and the rental of real estate.
Thanks to the exploitation of these productive programs, coverage of the target population served was increased, focused on: orphaned children (CAR Chaves de la Rosa), destitute elderly (Albergue de Jesús), mentally ill (CAR Las Mecedes), women suffering domestic violence (Hogar de María).
