| | | | | Extra info | Comelco or Preserven Milk Coöperatie was a Belgian dairy company in Aalter , which originated in 1962 after the combination of a few smaller dairies from East and West Flanders .
The merger initiative came from Valère Lippens from Sleidinge , whose family had been active in the industry since 1890 . The company was called Saint Joris after the patron saint of Sleidinge.
Another player was the Maes family who started in 1901 - in the center of Oedelem - with the Ste. Marie Dairy , later in Zomergem . Also the Donck family from Passendale , of the same cheese, participated in the project. Later, other firms also joined, such as the Lacons ( Stassano ) from Rotselaar and Upeco (Joyvalle). The result was a steady growth through a larger range of products, as well as the development of better methods of storing and packaging dairy products.
Comelco realized in Belgium brand names like Stassano, Stabilac, Yazoo and Joyvalle for the dairy products and Passendale for cheese. Another activity was the manufacture of milk powder and butter, immediately processing of summer surpluses in concentrated form.
In 1991 , Comelco - then Belgium's largest private dairy company - was taken over by Dutch Campina . Gradually, there was more integration of activities and practices. In October 1996 , Comelco disappeared from Campina. First as company name, later for all products.
In December 2008 , Campina merged with Friesland Foods and continues under the name FrieslandCampina . |
