In 1780, Graubünden brewer Rageth Mathis opened a small brewery in the Welschdörfli of Chur . The competition was huge: there were more than 260 breweries in Switzerland at that time. At the beginning of the 20th century, the small breweries merged as a result of industrialization into larger breweries. So also the brewery of Rageth Mathis, which joined in 1902 the Aktienbrauerei Chur . Shortly thereafter, the Rhaetische Aktienbrauerei emerged, with breweries from Thusis to Davos and gradually took over all the independent breweries of Graubünden. In 1953, the company underwent a diversification in the alcohol-free area with Rätia Getränke AG.
In 1971, the Engadiner Aktienbrauerei and the Rhätische Getränke AG merged to form the brewery Calanda Bräu in Chur. In 1993 the Calanda Bräu was taken over by Heineken and to date, continues to produce the traditional Bündner beer brand Calanda. |
