La cervecería La Calera was founded in 1891 by Mr. George Fuchs Treiber, a German born in Hockenheim in 1856. First known as Compañía Cervecera, it was a rather small plant, which was constantly extended until 1906 when it was damaged by a great earthquake that shook the central area. After this large earthquake, Jorge Fuchs included a partner in the company, which would provide a capital injection to overcome the damage and continue to grow between 1908 and 1915, a period that is known as Compañía Cervecera Fuchs y Plath. In 1916 the factory was purchased by the fledgling company Compañía de Cervecerías Unidas (CCU).
In 1953, after years of closure, the buildings of the plant were involved in malting under the administration of Miguel Erlwein Schleyer, and under the name of "Maltería Aconcagua".
In 1985, after the financial failure of "Maltería Aconcagua," United Breweries Company returned to show interest in the plant, but this time acquiring it through its agricultural division, annexing it and presenting it as a "subsidiary CCU" under the name "Agricultural Victoria Ltd."
In 1998 the malting plant of La Calera was again sold by CCU to the Chadwick family, who administer it under the name of "Agro Pacific" until May 2000, when the plant again closed for a long period due to bankruptcy requested by banks. |
