In 1897, six breweries were consolidated to form the Consumers Brewing Co: John Roehm, The Welde & Thomas BC, Spaeth Krautter & Hess, John C Miller & Sons, The Mutual BC, and The Excelsior BC...Henry Hess became the president of the company. Louis Krautter sued Henry Hess for debts owed from the consolidation. In December 1900, Henry Hess stepped down as president, most likely from the conflicts with Louis Krautter. The Spaeth and Hess plant was eventually sold in March 1903.
