| | | | | Extra info | In 1865, prospectors drilling for oil in Lower Mifflin Township (Cumberland County, PA) struck a large, high quality aquifer. A local doctor was so impressed with the water’s purity that he provided it to his patients. By 1885 the water was being bottled and sold for medicinal purposes. Later, the Cloverdale Spring Company was formed and used the water in its soft drink business. The company’s name described the profusion of clover growing near the aquifer. Because of its great purity, Cloverdale water was shipped to workers on the Panama Canal to reduce the instances of typhoid fever. In 1919, a three mile underground pipe was constructed directly from the source of the water (the spring) to the bottling plant (which was located on Rt. 533 in Newville). At one point, the company had at least 16 bottling locations in 7 states. The company was purchased by Allegheny Pepsi Cola Bottling Company in 1961. They continued with the Cloverdale line for a while but eventually phased them out. Pepsi built a new plant in 1964 beside the old bottling works. |
