Brewer/bottler #5348 | | | | | | | | | | Extra info | Main products before WWII were various pickles and a good selection of mineral waters. After the war the firm expanded rapidly to become one of the largest suppliers of mineral waters, beers, wines and spirits in the country. The factories of Hey Brothers and Wilkinson's provided between them, one of the main sources of employment for the young ladies of Old Church, the choice being either a 'caker' at Wilkinson's or a 'pickler' at Hey Brothers.
The Birdsall Family took over from the Hey Family and grew the company from four wagons and the factory in Mill Dam to 150 wagons, 500 employed, two factories in Ponty and twelve depots round north of UK. They turned million bottles of pop a year out for supermarkets, cash n carries and retail distribution a year. The fastest filling line was running at a 1000 bottles a minute. Empty bottles to fully labelled, packed and palletised.
With beer and spirit and snacks they turned £50,000,000 a year over. Then sold in 2002. |
