Extra info ZHB was the collective brand name for various beers of the Hague South Holland Brewery. Best known ZHB beer was the lager . The downtown brewery existed from 1881 to 1974.
South Holland Brewery was built on a large plot on the corner of the Noordwal and at the Wester Mills and was put into service in 1881. The founder was Louis Kirchmann (1845-1899) from Deventer, his family came from Germany. He bought a piece of land on the outskirts of the city, let it build the brewery, but also a cooper making barrels and an ice to keep the beer cool. His merchandise could be transported by ship from the Noordwal. In 1894 granted Queen Regent Emma to the brewery status purveyor.
After twenty-five years, the company had 250 people employed. It was the largest brewery in The Hague who had a complex property that ran until the current Noordstraat and Sirtemastraat. The factory was expanded and came a new chimney with a height of 55 meters. In 1914, the ZHB started to export beer, eventually to 83 different countries.
The brewery had a large number of hotels and cafés in the country. This was a deliberate choice that was put in motion by a statutory changes of SA in 1892. This one was assured of a fixed outlet. In The Hague they possessed include The House of Lords , Hotel Seinpost, De Nieuwe Doelen, South Holland Coffee, hundreds of cafes and Grand Hotel Central , where the 75th anniversary of the brewery was celebrated. Also in Amsterdam available to the brewery on a number of cafes, including Local 't Loosje the Nieuwmarkt . There is a large tile panel in the wall brick painted with a view of the brewery.
On July 8, 1922 there was a fire on a pakzolder, the damage amounted to 100,000 guilders, but there were no deaths.
On November 22, 1929 broke shortly after the other two fires out. The first fire was in the main building on the Noordwal and could be extinguished quickly. The second fire was in the attic of the not yet put into use at the new wing behind it Sirtemastraat. The damage was not too bad and the factory did not have to be shut down. Cause of the fires showed was a burning cigarette and short circuit to be.
Two personnages, Wout and Malt called playing in advertising campaigns ZHB a major role. A wellknown joke about beer was the variation Hospital Beer on the ZHB letters. In 1960 ZHB merged with the Rotterdam Oranjeboom and ZHB continued to brew lager called Skol . The brewery closed in 1974 and became the factory and all areas demolished next.
