| | | | | | Extra info | Antonio Figueras Cerdà (1866-1933) was born in 1866, Mallorca, Spain and migrated to Puerto Rico in 1884 at the age of 18.
When the three founders of the Casa de Roses distillery retired to Spain, they left their business to his nephews Lorenzo Roses Borrás, Vicente Caballero and Antonio Figueras Cerdá, calling the company “Roses & Co. Successors”. Figueras grew the company and founded new companies and along with several distilleries in Arecibo, PR, merged into the Puerto Rico Distilling & Co. on February 2, 1911. Now known for the famous “Ron Rico” or the Central Sugar Cambalache, among other businesses as coffee plantations.
The Puerto Rico Distilling Co. Inc. was born in the town of Arecibo on February 2, 1911. Besides manufacturing distilled spirits for the liquor industry in Puerto Rico, they obtained permission to manufacture denatured alcohol to meet the needs of the island and exported to U.S..
In 1918, the United States passed the Act to enforce the prohibition of alcoholic beverages. All the liquor stores were given the opportunity to liquidate their inventory by a period of one year. The law was in force on the island until 1934. Until that year, the Puerto Rico Distilling Co. was dedicated exclusively to manufacturing industrial alcohol and also to export denatured alcohol sold for use in paint factories in the United States.
The company also manufactured alcoholado, a preparation obtained from the distillation of alcohol for medicinal purposes. The company first produced the Santa Claus alcoholado and in 1923, they released the Superior alcoholado 70, which still to this day, remains the best-selling medicinal product in Puerto Rico. |
