| | | | | | | Extra info | The original patent for the Orange Crush soft drink was created in 1906 in Chicago by a man named J.M. Thomson. In 1916, Clayton J. Howell (president and founder of the Orange Crush Company) partnered with Californian Neil C. Ward to incorporate the company in Los Angeles. Ward, a beverage and extract chemist, perfected the process of blending ingredients to create the exclusive formula that yielded the improved, all-natural orange flavor of Orange Crush.
Soft drinks of the time often carried the surname of the creator along with the product name. C. J. Howell was not new to the soft drink business, having earlier introduced Howell's Orange Julep. Since Howell sold the rights to use his name in conjunction with his first brand, Ward was given the naming honors and Crush was first premiered in 1916 as "Ward's Orange Crush." While the company was headquartered in Chicago, its laboratories were in Los Angeles.
Orange Crush was the first flavor produced by the company. Other sodas followed like "Ward’s Lemon Crush" in 1919 and "Ward’s Lime Crush" in 1920. Grape Crush was introduced in 1960, Cherry Crush in 1962 and Pineapple Crush in 1966. Crush Lime reappeared as a limited-time offering in 2010. The Mr. Crushy logo was first emobossed on bottles in 1920.
The company went through several owners including Pepsi, Procter & Gamble and Cadbury Schweppes. Today, Crush is part of Dr Pepper Snapple Group, an integrated refreshment beverage business marketing more than 50 beverage brands throughout North America.
Mr. Crushy was Crush’s mascot during the 1930s and ‘40s.
