| | | | | | | Extra info | The National Fruit Flavor Company was formed in 1917 by Ira Harkey and Virgil Browne in New Orleans. By 1921, the company had achieved national and international distribution, due primarily to the success of its flagship carbonated beverage product, Orange Squeeze, which was sold to independent bottlers throughout the United States and in five foreign countries. At its height, Squeeze soda came in 36 different flavors and was distributed in more than 30 states. Squeeze's catchphrase was "With the True Fruit Flavor" and the iconic logo, featuring two children sitting on a bench, arm in arm, was actually adopted from a cover from the Saturday Evening Post and was in use from as early as 1925. The drawing showed a boy and girl sitting on a bench hugging with a full moon in the background. The hug symbolized the “squeeze” and was based on a Saturday Evening Post cover by Norman Rockwell called, “Little Spooners” or “Puppy Love.”
In 1961, Adam Gambel purchased the company from Ira Harkey and expanded its products and services. In addition to the beverage flavors, National Fruit Flavor successfully developed flavors and concentrates for the food service, dairy, bakery and vitamin supplement industries. |
