| | | | | Extra info | The oldest written record of the beer brewery in Bytca was preserved in the list of estates of the Byzantine estates, which is linked to the year 1604, where the Latin sentence in the property inventory says "Here is a brewery". Probably, however, the brewery was established in the 16th century, when there was a great development of brewery in Slovakia. An important role in the history of Bytca was played by the Thurz family, who owned the Byzantine manor and thus the brewery until 1627. Juraj Thurzo held the palatine function and was in fact the second person in the kingdom. After the Thurzovs, he took over the estates with the brewery Esterházyovcov and remained in their ownership until the 1960s. In 1861 they rented the estate and the castle and the brewery, and in 1868 they sold it to the wood-maker Leopold Popper, who later owned the baron's title. Since then, the castle brewery has been in the hands of the Popper family. After Leopold Popper's death, three of his sons were inherited by his property, and the dwelling property remained in the hands of his heirs until this century. The last descendant of the Lothar Popper family died in 1963. Everyone here also finds an explanation of why this famous name has been preserved in the name of today's Byzantine beer. |
