| | | | | Extra info | Samuel Hall Mowbray began brewing and selling his beer in Grantham in September 1828. The company was first registered in May 1888, when the firm acquired the wine and spirit business of Burbidge & Hutchinson. Over the next few decades Mowbray & Co expanded rapidly and acquired the brewing firms of Redhead & Co of Grantham and Dawber & Co of Lincoln, in 1891 and 1905 respectively. In 1927 the company acquired G & HR Hunt's brewery in Stamford and by this date Mowbray's had expanded outside the county to become one of the largest brewing concerns in the East Midlands. After merging with Flower's of Stratford on Avon in 1954, the organisation became part of Whitbread Plc in 1962 and 5 years later the Grantham brewery was closed down. |
